Android custom ROMs

Custom ROMs

CalyxOS

Calyx OS is probably my favourite Android ROM ever, unlike most Android ROMs it keeps Android's security and arguably improves it so you don't have to pray your "Google Account" (that holds your app history your credit card and browser history) is safe from hacking. It also removes the stupid Google apps on your phone that could not be deleted on the original Android, plus some of the tracking. When first installed you can chose to preinstall some apps all of which are open source and can be deleted after. You can also use MicroG which tries to rezolve some of the problems of being on an custom ROM. The only downside is that it pretty much only works on Google Pixel phones. I am looking forward to trying out this one, it also does pretty well in reviews

GrapheneOS

GrapheneOS is basically hardened Android. It adds a few improvements to Android security and more control. You can even control permission access to the gyroscope sensor.Privacy is no question better than in CalyxOS, Android and most if not all Android ROMs. The selection of apps preinstalled is too narrow which I don't really like. The most intresting of which is the Vanadium browser, basically Chromium without the bloat put in by the big G and it is hardened. Now some cons are that you can't use MicroG. According to the statistics CalyxOS and Android DESTROY GrapheneOS, you WILLnotice it. I mean yeah your apps will work just fine but opening apps and other tasks are just slower. The final con is that it only works on Pixel phones.. I think most of you would much prefer CalyxOS but GrapheneOS is a decent option if you want to get as close as possibile to the privacy of a Linux phone.

Conclusion

Conclusion: There are a lot of Android ROMs, I only reccomended the ROMs that keep Android's security because without security your privacy is basically gone. These may not be the best options for some, I get some of you might want Linux phones on this page but in my opinion they are not ready. Custom Android ROMs already lose out on a lot of apps which does not really matter, at least you have FDroid, but Linux phones's app selection is not good enough, the performance is poor and it feels like in Aplha. Android is still king.
